  • Primary Sports Grants

At Stoke Row C.E. Primary we highly value the contribution of P.E. to the health and well-being of out children. In addition, we believe that an outstanding P.E. curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of the children. Through sport, the children begin to develop the important qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work and ambition; qualities tat they are then able to use in their learning within the classroom as well as in wider life outside school.

We are committed to ensure that all pupils receive at least 2 hours of quality well-planned P.E. per week delivered by confident and well trained teachers. Through the local sport partnership (SSP), the school takes part in family and partnership competitions as well as those organised by local private schools and sports groups. Other agencies and specialists are used to enhance the variety of in-school sports and extra-curricular activities and talented children are encouraged to join local clubs and to attend events which develop their skills. We also have great parental support in running after school clubs, including a thriving weekly running club.

Primary school PE and sport funding

The government provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education (P.E.) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school head teachers.

This funding is dedicated and ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of P.E. and sport in schools.

Purpose of funding

School must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of P.E. and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

  • Possible uses for the funding include:
  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools.
