Learning and the Curriculum
Our aim at Stoke Row is for our children’s learning to be personalised to our school vision and values. Our school vision is for our pupils to be a bright light with their own unique sparkle so in each curriculum area we have considered how our learning can reflect this and prepare for our pupils bright futures.
We aim to prepare our children for the challenges they will face in the modern world and in order to do this we wanted to ensure our curriculum was reflective of society as a whole and prioritised respecting and appreciating diversity and different cultures.
Our curriculum is designed to help our pupils to recognise the contribution of others, understand the part they play in the world and how they can become leaders in their community. Through our vision and values, we encourage our children to care about our planet, ask questions, be creative and we aim for all of this to be fostered through a sense of awe and wonder at the world around them. Providing the children with regular opportunities to reflect on their own well-being and spirituality is also very important and incorporated into our daily school life.
At Stoke Row, we are committed to an ethos of ‘growth mindset’ among pupils and staff where children understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and perseverance as opposed to a ‘fixed mindset’ whereby children believe their basic abilities, their intelligence and their talents are just fixed traits. In line with this, we focus on developing children’s independent learning skills. At the start of each academic year we have our first week purely based upon ‘learning to learn’ activities to ensure all pupils are confident in their learning abilities.
Curriculum Subjects
Every opportunity is taken to link Maths and English into other subjects and make the children’s learning experience as real as possible. Whilst English and Maths are taught every morning, a range of subjects are taught in the afternoons including: Geography, History, Science, Computing, Art and Design, Design and Technology (DT), Religious Education (RE), Physical Education (PE) and Music. French is also taught in key stage two.
Phonics and Reading
Bug Club is our systematic phonics and reading program that is designed to develop confident and motivated readers. Phonics is taught daily with Reception and Key Stage One. To find out more about synthetic phonics, please click here.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. The subject overview is at the bottom of this page.
Homework
Homework for all year groups is set weekly. As children approach secondary school we increase their homework to help prepare them for the next stage in their school career. All children are encouraged to read daily and we ask parents and carers to complete reading diaries, but it is important the quantity is appropriate for each child and may be a page or a whole short book.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum
During their year in reception Class our children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and are assessed throughout the year using the Foundation Stage Profile. This is based on ongoing observation and assessment in the three prime and four specific areas of learning plus three characteristics of effective learning.
