Welcome to Yellow ClassYellow Class is a mixed aged class of Year 1 and Year 2 children. We have daily Literacy and Numeracy. We use drama and discussion to develop and build upon our previous understanding of books and stories, and writing different types of texts for ourselves. We all have termly targets that we hope to meet to further our development, as well as targets that we set for ourselves. Our numeracy seeks to develop our mental strategies and confidence in maths through computer games and interactive learning experiences. Because the children are in Yellow Class for 2 years we approach the curriculum on a 2 year cycle rotation to make sure that we cover all the areas of learning in a fun and exciting manner without unnecessary repetition. Every short term there is a theme for our learning which aims to incorporate all areas of the curriculum to make the learning experience as relevant and interactive as possible. For the theme “Animals and Ourselves” we learn about the human body, animals and their behaviour, and inventions that have changed our lives including toilets. There are plenty of opportunities for exploring the subject creatively through a range of medium in art as well as dance and drama. We visit the Discovery Centre to explore our senses and learn about science in a fun interactive environment. The theme “Our Local Park” involves looking at forces in action in science, our local area and the way it compares to other areas. There are plenty of opportunities for visiting local parks to compare them and of course plenty of chances for adventurous play on the equipment! We make models of park equipment and make films of ourselves playing in different locations. When “Toys” is our topic we explore how they have changed through time and how we think they might continue to change in the future. We make toys with moving parts or puppets and map routes using the ICT toys. In “Habitats” we explore and discover the way that the environment impacts upon the animals that live there and how humans have adapted to match their habitat and how they have changed the habitat to meet their own needs. We look at an Island Home and compare it to living in the countryside. There are plenty of opportunities for trips into the local environment to see if we can find any signs of animals which live in our area and trips out of the classroom. Another theme is all about studying London and the way it has changed over time. We learn about the Great Fire of London as well as other historical events that have happened in the city. We try to take a trip to our capital city and visit the National History Museum and look at some of the architecture. We also learn about some of the art which is stored in London and make art of our own. We also learn about “Healthy Living”. We find out about the food that people eat in different countries and trying new food ourselves. The children bake healthy treats and think about the different elements of a healthy life. And of course we also build lots of Christmas activities into Term 2 including singing the backing for the Blue Class Nativity so they can concentrate on their acting! As we approach spring we also look at the way the local area starts to change and think about the things that are needed in order for plants to grow. We grow our own plants in different environments and see which things have the biggest impact on their development. Easter activities are built into the end of Term 4, from Easter Egg hunts to decorating our own eggs. Well, that’s a sample of some of the things we learn about and do during the year, but every year is different. So come and visit us to see what we are doing this year … |
