Welcome to Yellow ClassYellow Class is a mixed aged class of Year 1 and Year 2 children and is taught by Samantha Buckley with brilliant assistance from Pam Cooper and Joanne Byrne. This is the first year that this team have been working together in Yellow Class and we fully anticipate having a lot of fun and covering a lot of learning. We will be adding pictures and news updates across the year as we carry out the activities described … We have daily Literacy and Numeracy. We will be using drama and discussion to develop and build upon our previous understanding of books and stories and writing different types of texts for ourselves. We all have termly targets that we hope to meet to further our development as well as targets that we will set for ourselves. Our numeracy will seek to develop our mental strategies and confidence in maths through computer games and interactive learning experiences. Because the children are in yellow class for 2 years we approach the curriculum on a 2 year cycle rotation to make sure that we cover all the areas of learning in a fun and exciting manner without unnecessary repetition. Every short term there is a theme for the learning which aims to incorporate all areas of the curriculum to make the learning experience as relevant and interactive as possible. The themes for the year are “Animals and Ourselves” where we will be learning about the human body, animals and their behaviour, and inventions that have changed our lives including toilets. There will be plenty of opportunities for exploring the subject creatively through a range of medium in art as well as dance and drama. We will be making a visit to the Discovery Centre to explore our senses and learn about science in a fun interactive environment. In Term 2 we are studying “Our Local Park” looking at forces in action in science, our local area and the way it compares to other areas. There will be plenty of opportunities for visiting local parks to compare them and of course plenty of chances for adventurous play on the equipment! We will be making models of park equipment and making films of ourselves playing in different locations. Of course we will also be building lots of Christmas activities into this term including singing the backing for the Blue Class Nativity so they can concentrate on their acting! After Christmas we will be looking “Toys” as our topic exploring how they have changed through time and how we think they might continue to change in the future. We will be making toys with moving parts or puppets and mapping routes using the ICT toys. We will also be looking at the way the local area is starting to change as we approach spring and thinking about the things that are needed in order for plants to grow. We will be growing our own plants in different environments and seeing which things have the biggest impact on their development. In Term 4 we will be looking at “Habitats”. We will explore and discover the way that the environment impacts upon the animals that live there and how humans have adapted to match their habitat and how they have changed the habitat to meet their own needs. We will be looking at an Island Home and comparing it to living in the countryside. There will be plenty of opportunities for trips into the local environment to see if we can find any signs of animals which live in our area and trips out of the classroom. Easter activities will be built into the end of this term from Easter Egg hunts decorating our own eggs. Term 5 will be all about studying London and the way it has changed over time. We will be learning about the Great Fire of London as well as other historical events that have happened in the city. We would like to take a trip to our capital city and visit the National History Museum and look at some of the architecture. We will be learning about some of the art which is stored in London and making art of our own. In the final term we will be learning about “Healthy Living”. We will be learning about the food that people eat in different countries and trying new food ourselves. The children will be baking healthy treats and thinking about the different elements of a healthy life. Well, that’s a sample of some of the things we will be learning to about and to do this year, and as for next year? Well, you will just have to wait and see … |
