NEW YEAR UPDATE FROM THE TIRELESS TRAVELLING TWOSOME!

Hi all,

Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. Yvonne and I are currently in Perth but are getting ready to fly to Sydney in a couple of days and look for work. I think the brats go back to school here in about a week so we might try to find some teaching work. I can't wait!

Christmas was rather different this year - a barbie and beers on the beach, but it was a really good day. Have been to the beach quite a lot actually. Trouble is we keep hearing about 3m great white shark sightings and people being eaten so don't venture out too far. Done lots of body boarding but not yet tried proper surfing - perhaps when we get to Sydney.

New Year was spent at the races - The Perth Cup - on our first race Yvonne and I both put a bet on - to win - my horse came in first, Yvonnes second. As you can guess I was rather pleased, Yvonne was gutted!

Did a stint in the outback - a bit of easy work for free board and lodgings (or so we were told!). Trouble was, the people who ran the outback tours were quite quiet. Little did we know what was in store. After a relaxing first day we were then set to work building chalets for them. Basically I was digging holes in hot weather for some fat bloke who couldn't be bothered to do it himself! Not my idea of fun. Did slightly (but not much) better stuff like rounding up sheep but was glad to get away after 4 days.

After that we decided to hire a car, go down south and see what everyone was talking about. We had a great week visiting some of the bays along the coast. Some of them reminded us of the Cook Islands with the turquoise water and white sand. We saw manta rays, dolphins, kangaroos and emu's (no sign of Rod Hull, though). We also saw lots of rocks - wave rock and the pinacles (which are basically lots of pointed rocks in the desert). Also huge Karri and tingle trees. My phone got broken in an incident in Bunbury. Some guy started shouting at us - but we ignored him as we thought he was a bit of a mentalist - but then he shouted could anyone swim (the fool couldn't himself!) and we saw his grandchild floating away in the sea. I dived in - not realising I had my phone in my pocket - and it got a bit damp. Trouble is the kid was being pushed along the shore by the strong wind and even though I swam as hard as I could but couldn't reach him. Eventually he was pushed along to a pier and someone fished him out. Anyway, my phone does not work so I can now be contacted on Yvonne's phone.

Keep us informed about what you are all up to.

Love from Philip and Yvonne
