All About Blue Class

We are Foundation Stage children and we are aged 4 & 5. We have lots of fun in class with our teacher Mrs Buckley. OFSTED said that our learning is ‘outstanding’ and that we feel safe and confident in class – which is true!

Blue Class made Christmas Tree Decoration Letters from their names

We spend lots of time focussing on learning our letter sounds. We call this phonics and it is very important to help us learn to read and write. As we get better and better at reading and writing our letter sounds we start to use them to make words and then, when we get really good, to put our words together to make sentences, stories and even whole books!

We love listening to stories, our teacher does some very silly voices and sings us some very silly songs. We use all the things we learn to make our own books. Around Easter we have a book fair in our class where our parents can come and look at the fantastic fiction and fact books that we have each made in class, and we can read them to our visitors. By the end of the year the aim is that we will be reading and writing with increasing independence and using really fantastic and interesting words in our literacy work. At the end of the year we make a really great fiction book and we practice hard so we can we read it to children from nurseries nearby to show them how much we have learnt and how clever they will be when they start coming to school!

In Science Blue Class learn about animals, where they live and what they like to eat. We use the things we learn about to make a fact book.

We also spend lots of time learning our numbers because they are important too! We play counting games and sing counting songs. We play computer games on our interactive white board, which is so much fun it does not seem like learning at all! We also learn about shapes and size in all sorts of fun and exciting ways.

Mrs Buckley tells us we do lots of other work too but it all seems like such fun that we don’t believe it is work at all! When we first start we do lots of art and craft activities all about ourselves, which is really easy because we all know about ourselves and our families. In the Autumn we watch fireworks and learn about Diwali and bonfire night then make some really great firework pictures. After that we take walks in the woods looking at the trees and collecting leaves to make pictures. Then, for Christmas, we have a Christmas nativity play which is good fun, learning the songs and how to act (all the parents really like it but sometimes they cry a bit – they say it is because we are so lovely…?) We have a Christmas party and make all sorts of fantastic Christmas decorations for our class and for our homes. We even make cards and presents for our family. Jane helps us lots with all the sticky and messy stuff, she is our Learning Support Assistant and she is very lovely.

In the New Year we get to come to school ALL DAY and to stay for lunch with the older children which is brilliant because they are very kind and look after us really well. Even Mrs Buckley has dinner with us and tells our parents’ if we have been eating our vegetables so that we grow big and strong. We learn all about animals and plants in the next 2 terms and as Spring gets nearer Sally, our other Learning Support Assistant, helps us to plant a garden and look after it. We even get to pick and eat some of the great things we grow – but not until after we have cleaned them. Then we take a visit to a place such as Odds Farm Park to see what animals are being born (and to have a massive play in the park area!). Last time we even get to see a cow being milked and stroked some animals and fed them. At the end of term we take our Easter Bonnets home to decorate and have a parade in the Church. We win prizes and Yellow class judge to see who should win a special prize for having an extra specially good bonnet.

Summer term is the most fun though because by then we are grown up enough and so clever that we are starting to work on our own and doing really good stories, role play and speech bubbles. We learn about the stories in the Bible, fiction (made up stories) and stories where we can learn a lesson (fables). We make gingerbread men when we read the story and porridge for the three bears. We even go down in the woods for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with our own favourite teddies from home – it is the best time of year because it is so lovely and sunny and we can do lots of work outside!

Anyway, there are some very exciting things going on in class right now so I will have to go so I don’t miss out. There is even more stuff though that I have not told you about, but you can always come to the school and have a look if you want to come and learn and play with us next year…we’d love to see you and then we would be the big children and we could take care of you and show you around….bye!
