Shining our light

On Wednesday, 9th December the children at Stoke Row School had a special afternoon reflecting on the school vision and its biblical roots. The vision draws inspiration from Philippians 2:15-16 (NIV) “You will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life” and Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”.

The vision is based on the idea of raising children to be a light in a dark world. In the same way our village is one of the highest places in the Chilterns, we want to be a bright light on a hill, unhidden and showing the way. In order to help the children understand the vision further each child made their own lantern which had a little light inside. On the lantern, the children had written ways they shine themselves and bring light to the world in their own unique way. In the afternoon, we took our lanterns down to The Cherry Orchard and placed them on the hill where the anniversary elephant stands. As it got darker, the lights shone out into the village.
